Most emergency preparedness guides recommend at least one flashlight per household member, plus a dedicated backup light stored in a central location like a kitchen drawer or hall closet. That way everyone has reliable light immediately, without searching a dark house for a single flashlight.

Before storm season, make sure rechargeable flashlights are fully charged and test the backup batteries in any dual-power models. Keep at least one lantern or wide-beam light on hand for whole-room lighting during extended outages, and store everything somewhere easy to reach such as a kitchen drawer or hall closet rather than a garage that's harder to get to safely once bad weather hits.

Runtime depends on the light's brightness setting and lumen output. A flashlight run on its lowest setting will last significantly longer than one run at full brightness. Most rechargeable flashlights offer several hours of runtime on a full charge, with lower-lumen settings extending that considerably for multi-day outages.

For emergency lights, always remember that you're buying for security, not brightness. High output settings are exciting, but drain batteries quickly and are completely unnecessary in the pitch-black interior of a home without power.

For general household use like dark hallways, checking on family members, or other basic tasks, 100 to 300 lumens is typically plenty. Higher-lumen flashlights (500+) are useful for outdoor use, larger spaces, or signaling, but aren't necessary for most indoor emergency scenarios.

It's best to periodically check and charge your emergency flashlight rather than leaving it on the charger indefinitely, as constant trickle charging can shorten battery lifespan over time. A good habit is charging it fully every few months, or whenever severe weather is forecast.
